Formed at the confluence of the Holston and French Broad rivers, the river runs directly through the heart of Knoxville, offering many locations for paddling, fishing and swimming; accessible boat ramps are located at Suttree Landing Park and Ijams Nature Center.

Knoxville Adventure Collective, located in the Outdoor Knoxville Adventure Center, seasonally offers canoes, kayaks and standup paddleboard rentals.
